MEMPHIS—Christian Brothers University baseball coach Phil Goodwin has announced the signing of Oxford, Miss., native Matt Van Slyke to a National Letter of Intent to play for the Bucs next spring.
Van Slyke, a 5-9 outfielder, hit .309 with one homer, two triples, six doubles, and nine steals for Oxford this spring. He also showed a good eye as his 15 walks helped him to a .511 on-base percentage. Van Slyke also drove in 15 runs.
Van Slyke, first cousin of former Major League Baseball star Andy Van Slyke, is the second Oxford HS product to sign with the Bucs this year, following Northeast Mississippi CC transfer Lee Paine, who graduated from Oxford two years ago.
Van Slyke and Paine join Humboldt pitcher Joey Blankenship and Fort Worth, Texas, hurler David Marshall.
