MEMPHIS—Visiting Arkansas-Monticello scored seven runs in the first inning and three in the ninth to claim an 11-10 win Sunday afternoon over the Christian Brothers University Bucs, completing a three-game sweep of the Bucs in the first Gulf South Conference West Division series of the season.

The Boll Weevils (15-9, 3-0 GSC West) exploded for seven runs in the top of the first on seven singles, two walks, and an error.

The Bucs (4-17, 0-3) answered with four runs in the bottom of the first, on a walk, a hit by pitch, and three hits, including a two-run Josh Shelton (Rosemark, Tenn./Christian Brothers HS) double.

After the first inning saw a combined 20 hitters, 11 runs, and 18 batters reach first base safely, neither team scored over the next three innings.

The Bucs drew even with three in the bottom of the fifth.  Chance Ruggeroli (Las Vegas, Nev./Shadow Ridge HS) led off with a walk, and back-to-back doubles from Matt Stephany (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and Tyler Dunn (Bartlett, Tenn./Tipton-Rosemark Academy) scored runs, and Dunn came home on a Matt Van Slyke (Oxford, Miss./Oxford HS) single.

The Boll Weevils broke the tie in the seventh as Kyle Henry doubled and scored on a Wayne Hawkins single.

The Bucs answered with a three-run eighth inning as Joseph Kaminski (Sherwood, Ark./Little Rock Catholic HS) blasted a two-run double and scored on a bases-loaded walk to Ruggeroli, but the Bucs left the bases loaded with a pair of popouts, sending the Bucs to the ninth inning with a 10-8 lead.

The Boll Weevils cut the lead in half quickly as Brian Johnson crushed a towering leadoff homer to right-center.  UAM loaded the bases with two walks and a single, and a passed ball and a sacrifice fly put the Boll Weevils ahead 11-10.

Brett Stewart shut the Bucs down in the ninth, finishing with an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief with no hits and one walk allowed.

Yogi Vanaman (Cordova, Tenn./Cordova HS) paced the Bucs' offense with three hits, while Van Slyke, Kaminski, and David Alan Wright (Olive Branch, Miss., DeSoto Central HS) each had two hits.  Van Slyke and Alan Wright (Memphis, Tenn., Christian Brothers HS) scored twice each, while Kaminski and Shelton each drove in two.  John Romo threw a shutout inning of relief in the eighth.

The Bucs will try to get back on the right track Tuesday as they host a doubleheader against Lyon at 1 p.m.
